I am such a fan of really cute themed treats. If you’re inviting me to your holiday party, I’m coming with a treat that matches that holiday.

So, a few years ago, I made these Chocolate Christmas Tree Pretzel Sticks. They’re super cute, and, honestly, pretty easy to make.

What’s really great about them is you can make them up to two weeks ahead of time. That’s amazing because the days leading up to Christmas are really busy and the nights are filled with Christmas parties. So you just don’t have the time to make treats the day before a party. With these, you don’t have to. You can make them, store them on the counter, and grab the container when it’s party time.

You can serve them on their own or you can use them to top Christmas cupcakes. Whatever works for you.

These Chocolate Christmas Tree Pretzels would be adorable to give out as a gift for neighbors or friends this holiday season.

How To Make Chocolate Christmas Tree Pretzel Sticks:

Melted green chocolate in a bowl.

Melt the candy melts according to the package.

Quick tip if you’ve never used candy melts before. Pour them into a bowl and microwave for a minute. Then, take the bowl out and stir. Put them back in the microwave for 30 seconds and stir, repeating this until they’re melted.

Our Tips For Using Candy Melts post can give you more help, if you need it.

Melted green chocolate in a ziptop bag.

Spoon the melted chocolate into a ziptop plastic bag. Cut the tip off with scissors to make a piping bag.

If you have an actual piping bag, you can use that instead. But I feel like most people don’t have professional baking tools, so a ziptop plastic bag is a quick and frugal way to make a piping bag.

A green chocolate line on a silicone baking mat.

Pipe a straight line, about half the length of the pretzel stick, onto a silicone baking mat-lined cookie sheet.

Pipe a triangle around the straight line.

Place the pretzel stick on top of the line down the center.

Traverse across the rod with the melted candy melts. Be sure to touch the triangle at the edges. Leave some room between the piped lines to show some of the pretzel, just like you’d see some of the trunk and branches of an actual tree.

Hover above the pretzel stick while you’re doing this because you don’t want to be too close and bump the pretzel causing it to roll and ruin your piping.

Put a star-shaped sprinkle at the top of the tree.

Decorate the candy melt Christmas tree with sprinkles.

Continue until you’ve made all your pretzels. One-third of the candy melts bag (4 oz.) will make 21 to 24 trees, depending on how wide you made the triangles.

To make it easier, you can actually pipe a few chocolate trees, then sprinkle them. That way, you don’t have to keep going back and forth between the piping and the sprinkles.

Since you will, from time to time, push the candy melts towards the hole in the ziptop bag, the warmth from your hand will keep the candy melts liquified. Once the candy melts are piped, they will chill quickly so be sure to sprinkle after you pipe three or four (depending on your speed).

By the time you’re done with 21 of them, the first ones you made should be hard enough to move. So, if you need to make more, you can move those into a container and then make more.

Chocolate Christmas Tree Pretzel Sticks: Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make these ahead of time?

You can make these up to two weeks ahead of time. Just make sure that they’re stored in an airtight container on the counter during that time.

You don’t want to store them in the fridge because that can cause them to discolor. And you don’t want to put them in the freezer because the pretzel can get soggy when it thaws.

How do you store Christmas Tree Pretzels?

Store these in an airtight container on the counter. You don’t want to put them in the fridge or the freezer.

Do you have to use candy melts to make these?

We absolutely suggest using candy melts to make these.

When you’re making a bunch, it takes time. And in that time, the green candy melts will cool. If they cool so much that you’re unable to continue piping, you can just pop them back in the microwave (in a bowl, not the bag, of course) and reheat them. They’ll be liquid-y again.

You can’t do that with chocolate chips. Once those harden, they’re done. So they’re not as easy to work with. Plus, if you can’t find green chocolate chips in the store (they’re out there, but they’re mint flavored), you’ll need to dye white chocolate green with oil based food coloring, and most people don’t have that.

Can you use mini pretzel rods instead of pretzel sticks?

When we originally made these (back in 2014!), we used mini pretzel rods. They came out great and were really easy to hold. But, I didn’t love them like that because the chocolate to pretzel ratio was off.

Using these thinner pretzel sticks is a much better ratio. Plus, these ones easily sit on top of cupcakes, in case you wanted to use them as a decoration for a cupcake (or on a Christmas cake).

What if you don’t have a silicone baking mat?

If you don’t have a silicone baking mat, you should probably invest in one. Honestly, I use mine all the time.

Using it for these Chocolate Christmas trees means the trees will easily pop off. You won’t have to worry about them sticking and all your hard work getting ruined.

If you don’t have one, you could use parchment paper instead.
