We have a lot of coasters in our house. Some of them were taken from bars, some of them were given to us as gifts, and we have a really nice set that we got for review once upon a time. What we lack, though, are DIY painted patriotic coasters. And with the amount of America-themed BBQ’s we host each year, we really could use some. So, of course, I did what any normal person would do. I made them. They were pretty simple, so you could make them in an afternoon before your July 4th barbecue.

How To Prune Your Garden

How To Prune Your Garden

If your garden is dying, it might need some pruning. Get tips in this how to prune your garden post from www.drugstoredivas.net.When we lived in the apartment, we had a great container garden on our porch. I grew tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants really well. We went up to New York for a vacation and, since we were still very new in town and didn’t trust anyone enough to come in our apartment to water the plants, I just left them to fend for themselves. They actually did really well, all things considered.

We moved from the apartment to a house last year and Pete built me a grow box. We also still had a small container garden because I ran out of space in the grow box. The majority of our plants did really well, but our oregano was the exception. It did so well that it actually lived through the winter without me taking care of it at all. It’s the Chuck Norris of our garden (I’d call it the cockroach, but at the end of the world, Chuck Norris will outlive the cockroaches).

A lot of why our plants do so well is because I prune them. So, if you want yours to do well, you have to know how to prune your garden.

How To Prune Your Garden

Look at your plants.

This tomato plant is from our apartment container garden. The top of the plant is green and healthy, but the bottom needed to be pruned. So how do you know what to pull and what to keep? Easy. The plant tells you how to prune your garden.

If your garden is dying, it might need some pruning. Get tips in this how to prune your garden post from www.drugstoredivas.net.

Check out the stems of the leaves in question. The stems that need to be pruned are yellow and snap off easily from the base of the plant. If you try to bend the stem and it doesn’t snap, leave it there.

Our plant had a lot of stems to pull. So we pulled off all the dead ones.

After you prune the stems, look at the healthy stems and see if there are any leaves that you can pull off individually.

We had quite a few of those too. Dispose of the old leaves and stems and your plant will get healthier. In addition, you can also use plant food to keep it healthy.

Pruning is such a simple gardening task, so you might overlook it. But you need to do it. If not, the dead parts will drain the nutrients and ruin the entire plant. Your plant will be wasting its energy on the dead leaves, taking away from what it can give the healthy parts and the fruit.

And this mentality goes for herbs too. With herbs, they may bloom. It’s so pretty. Almost overnight, our oregano bloomed beautiful flowers where I had picked oregano for dinner. The way I picked it, I pulled the top leaves off from the stem and left it bare. Flowers started blooming at the tops of the bare steps with some (very) small oregano leaves growing beneath. But the majority was the blooms. And I left them because they were really pretty. But it was killing our oregano production. It had almost stalled completely. So, despite the beauty, I pruned the oregano buy cutting the blooms and leaving about 4 to 6 inches of each stem.

And actually, that’s how you’re supposed to harvest oregano. Instead of pulling off only certain leaves, you are supposed to cut the whole stem back to about 4 to 6 inches. It’ll grow back.

Don’t worry about that bundle of blooms going to waste. I’m actually drying it on the counter right now.

How To Clean A Dishwasher In Three Steps

How To Clean A Dishwasher In Three Steps

You have to clean your dishwasher on a regular basis, but it's simple. Find out how to clean a dishwasher in three steps from www.drugstoredivas.net.So, let me put this out there: cleaning your dishwasher is a thing. It’s something you are supposed to do. I know, I know. It’s sort of news to me too. When we were in the apartment, I never cleaned our dishwasher. It cleaned our dishes and I assumed that meant it cleaned itself too. But you know what they say when you assume … you’re usually wrong. So yes, I was wrong about the dishwasher. It never occurred to me at the apartment, but in the house, well, I think we have harder water here. You can see build up on the bottom of the dishwasher like we never saw in the apartment, so cleaning was needed. Is needed. You have to do it regularly.

Sigh. Just one more thing for the to do list, right?

Actually, cleaning the dishwasher is really easy. It’s three steps. It takes a bit of time (which means you need to hand wash your dishes for a few days), but you only have to do it once every three or so months, so no big deal.

How To Clean A Dishwasher In Three Steps

It’s three steps. Just three. And you use items that you probably already have in your home.

You have to clean your dishwasher on a regular basis, but it's simple. Find out how to clean a dishwasher in three steps from www.drugstoredivas.net.

Step 1: Clean the filter.
Remove the filter (at the bottom of the dishwasher) and clean it. I wash it with dish soap, then rinse it with hot water. This way, I’m sure to clean the outside and inside of the filter. The inside is where the gunk really builds up, so you want to make sure you clean it. If you’re feeling lazy, you could soak your filter in hot, soapy water instead, but I feel like actually cleaning it by hand cleans it a little better.

Step 2: Wash with vinegar.
Pour one cup of white vinegar into a dishwasher-safe bowl and place that bowl in the top rack. Run a dishwasher cycle. Make sure the settings are on high temperature and sanitizing wash. Ours will only run these settings on a normal wash, not on a one hour cycle. Let it sit overnight.

Step 3:Wash with baking soda.
Sprinkle one cup of baking soda in the bottom of the dishwasher. Run it again on the same cycle: high temperature, sanitizing wash. Again, let it sit overnight.

That’s it. It’s a lot of waiting, but there’s not really much to it.

How To Keep Water From Boiling Out Of The Pot

How To Keep Water From Boiling Out Of The Pot

I work at home, which is a lot busier than you think it would be. People think, oh, you  work at home. You can do laundry and make dinner while you work. And you can whistle too. Sure, it seems like that’s all possible, but it’s really a lot of multitasking. Unloading the dishwasher while coffee is brewing; boiling eggs while I take a shower.

Yes to that last part. Very much yes.

It’s actually the perfect amount of time. Put eggs in water on the stove. Take a shower. Come back, eggs are ready.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Don’t you worry about the water boiling over?” No. Why? Because I have a trick.

Don't fear water boiling out of the post. It won't with this life hack from www.drugstoredivas.net. Learn how to Keep Water From Boiling Out Of The Pot.

How To Keep Water From Boiling Out Of The Pot

This is easy and the best life hack I can give you.

When you put water in a pot on the stove, put a wooden spoon over the top. I use bamboo wooden spoons, but any sort of wood will work. Just place it on top and go about your day. The water will boil but when it hits the spoon, it will simmer back down. Seriously. All on its own. It’s kind of like magic.

Test it out today when you’re making pasta. Or eggs for egg salad. You’ll be amazed.

How To Get Grease Out Of Your Jeans

How To Get Grease Out Of Your Jeans

Did you drip grease on your favorite pants? Find out how to get grease out of your jeans from www.drugstoredivas.net.

Experience is an educator, especially if experience comes in the form of dripping grease onto your favorite jeans when you’re out to lunch with your mom. Bad experience? Well, it depends how you look at it. Lunch with your mom is always a great thing; potentially ruining your jeans is not. Luckily for me, my mom had a trick for getting grease out of jeans.

I’ll let you in on it because I’m chock full of life hacks lately. (Speaking of those, have you seen my way to get wrinkles out of clothes without ironing? Okay, sorry, I’m burying the lede here.)

So, to get grease out of your jeans, as soon as you are able, use a toothbrush to scrub dish soap into the grease spot, then throw your jeans into the wash.

When they come out, inspect them. If the spot is out, feel free to dry your jeans. If the spot is still there, use the toothbrush to go back over it with dish soap. Then wash. Repeat that until the spot is gone. Then throw the jeans in the dryer. Make sure you don’t dry your jeans until you are sure the spot is out or it will set in forever.

That’s all.

It works too. After lunch, I followed these instructions and it worked to get the spot out.

The moral of the story: listen to your mom (and don’t freak out if you get grease on your jeans).

How To Get Wrinkles Out Of Clothes Without Ironing

How To Get Wrinkles Out Of Clothes Without Ironing

Did you forget to take your clothes out of the dryer and now they're wrinkled? No worries. Find out how to get wrinkles out of clothes without ironing here.

We’ve all done it. You wash a load of laundry, put it in the dryer … and then something happens. A friend calls to see if you can run an errand with her. Or you run to the grocery store for the thing you forgot for dinner, come home, start cooking, and completely forget about the laundry. Next thing you know, it’s bedtime so you lay down, and then remember the laundry that has been sitting in the dryer for hours. You don’t want to get up to fold it and, even if you do, it’ll be wrinkled.

And then that leaves the dreaded iron. You have to pull out the ironing board, find the iron, fill it with water (or empty it, depending on what the tags say), and spend more time ironing than you would rewashing it all.

But you don’t really want to rewash and start over. So where does that leave you? It leaves you at this post. I have a secret. Come closer. Closer.  Closer. I know how to get wrinkles out of clothes without ironing.

Toss a few ice cubes into the dryer with your dry clothes. Run the dryer on a normal cycle. You’ll hear a little clunking of the ice against the dryer walls, but that’s nothing to worry about. The heat in the dryer will melt the ice, creating a steam that will de-wrinkle the clothes. When the cycle is over, take out the clothes and fold them (unless you forget again).
