Cats are funny creatures. They can pretty much take care of themselves. Okay, it completely, of course, but they are sure a lot less work than other pets can be. So if you’ve been wanting to get a cuddly pet, a cat is a great idea.

If you do decide to get a new cat this year, this post is a good way to kick off that new relationship. We have four ways to take care of your new cat … starring my parents’ cat Sox. How cute is she? Doesn’t she just make you want to get a cat?

4 Ways To Take Care Of Your New Cat

1. Play with it.
Oh sure, it seems like playing with your new cat is a no brainer. But it’s actually really important for you to do so. If you have toys, like a laser pointer for your cat to chase, that is a great way to exercise him. You probably won’t take your cat out on a walk, so you need to find ways to get him some exercise indoors. And playing with him is great for you too.

2. Groom It.
This is really important, but even more so during seasons when your cat sheds more often. Your cat will use its tongue to groom itself. That’s great, until your cat gets a hairball and you are stuck cleaning it up. To prevent that as best as you can, purchase a cat brush and use it to brush off any excess hair from your cat. The more you can get, the less your cat can ingest, so do everyone a favor and groom him.

3. Clean The Litter Box.
Cats are great about the bathroom. They don’t need to be trained on how to use the litter box. They just know. What the cat can’t do, though, is clean its box; that part is up to you. You want to clean it often because if it gets too stinky, your cat will not use it. And that will create a big mess for you.

4. Feed It Wet Food.
Cats need to stay hydrated. They can do that with water, but some cats (especially males) may not drink enough. So they can supplement their water intake with wet food. That’s why it is important to always stock up and have it on hand.

You can do that right now at Petsmart. The pet store sells a bunch of varieties of Friskies and Fancy Feast wet canned food. If your cat is new, you may not be sure if he prefers fish, beef, or poultry, so, by going to a store that sells a wide variety, you can buy a bunch and see what your cat likes.

Even better, you can stock up and save at Petsmart. You’ll also get additional savings when you purchase 24 or more cans. Head over to your local store to get more details.

My parents’ cat Sox loves beef flavored food, and I stocked up for her recently. She is not my biggest fan (mostly because I love to pick her up and snuggle her when I see her, and cats like attention more on their own terms). But when I showed up with a bag filled with wet food, oh, she was my friend! She enjoyed her meal so much that she was licking her lips in appreciation.

If you have a cat, be sure to leave your tips in the comments, so new cat owners can check them out.
