There are five teen superheroes — Robin, Cyborg, Raven, Starfire, and Beast Boy — who live on their own (without parents). The show debuted in 2003 and Teen Titans Go!: Appetite For Disruption Season Two Part One DVD just came out this month (part two will be out in August). Season Two Part One is 26 11-minute episodes split over two discs.
For a purist who knows the Teen Titans from comic books, this might not be for you. For children whose first introduction to these superheros is through Teen Titans Go, it’s different. These are a more anime, comedic version of the Teen Titans comics. It’s the same team, and, actually, the same voices as the old cartoon. But this franchise is supposed to stand alone. It’s not meant to be a continuation of the Teen Titans series.
If you’re looking for an educational show, this is not it. One of the episodes, “Money Grandma” is named so because the Teen Titans call George Washington Money Grandma (because apparently, he looks like a woman on the back of the dollar bill. And since there aren’t any parents, there’s no one wise to explain that he is, in fact, a he). The show is fast paced, the animation is great, and the episodes … well, that depends on your age.
As an adult and/or parent, this show is kind of annoying. But this isn’t made for parents. It’s designed for young, new fans of DC Comics. It’s an entry point for them. So I had to ask my friend’s 7-year-old son Michael who is a huge superhero fan.
What do you like about Teen Titans Go? We asked him. He replied: “Beast Boy is my favorite because he changes into different animals.” I had to agree with that. Beast Boy is the green character (on the bottom right) and he does have the ability to shape-shift quickly, which amused even me. Michael had more reasons to like the Teen Titans. “Because Robin is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO hilarious and he acts like grandma.” Oh, he doesn’t mean Money Grandma. He means his real grandma. “They beat bad guys up. (And) because they eat a lot of food.”
And this is where I’m laughing so hard because it’s such a funny thing to point out. They do eat a lot of junk food. Cyborg (bottom left on the cover) really, really likes pizza. No parents to tell him no, right? Actually, my friend said, “One positive as a mom is that Robin stresses it’s important to eat healthy and follow the rules.” So at leas they’re not completely running a muck. And, I mean, they can’t. They do have to defend Jump City.
But I’m not the only one laughing. Michael is too. I’m laughing because of him; he is because of Teen Titans Go. “They make me laugh,” he said. “I love everything about it.”
